![]() ![]() There’s even one part where a man and a woman are having sex, and he grips her back so hard that we see the sores start to appear, thus mixing the two themes within the exact same shot! As the cult classic film, Scream, once boasted – sex in a horror movie equals death! This was illustrated by the editing of the scenes between something ‘sexy’ and something ‘gruesome’. It is interesting to point out how closely death and sex are linked within this movie, and this is perhaps yet another horror trope to be explored. That’s a very human thing to do, and that’s one of the reasons I think people really connected with the film.’ ![]() He says that, ‘It’s a deeply personal film on many levels, but everyone’s had that experience where they notice a spot on their hand or neck and say “What is that?” Until you know what it is, you imagine the worst. He claimed that he broke out in sores which bled when he scratched, and his skin even started to peel away when he shaved his face (much like we actually get to experience in the movie itself!). I actually really enjoyed the silly, exaggerated feel to the film, simply because it reminded me of some brilliant classic horrors from the 80s – it definitely had that style down to a tee.Īpparently, the idea for the film originally came from director, Eli Roth (famous now for his Hostel franchise), who suffered from a skin infection when he was working in Iceland. The acting is fairly good in general, with much of it a bit ‘tongue in cheek’, and Cabin Fever is even remembered rather fondly for the random ‘pancake’ karate scene. ![]() Ouch! Despite efforts made to call off the auditions, they went ahead as planned. Can anyone guess what day these auditions happened to fall on? That’s right, September 11th, 2001. Unfortunately, the audition scene for one of the actresses was one in which she compares her hopeless situation to being stuck on a plane which is going to crash. The car doesn’t work, there are no phones or mobile phones to use, and for some reason there doesn’t seem to be anybody around nearby who can help. There’s a heavy sense of futility surrounding this film, as the characters seem pretty much doomed to their fate, as no possible means of escape becomes available to them. A strain on the relationships takes place and it eventually succeeds in tearing them all apart (starting with their skin first!). This hedonistic party does not last long though, once they start to contract this deadly virus one-by-one and witness its horrifying effects on each other. We all know what this means though – sex and drugs and alcohol all round, with a small dose of mingling with drifters and shooting squirrels. It starts out innocently enough, as these things always do, with a group of college graduates who decide to have their own little ‘private’ vacation to let their hair down. However, the characters in Cabin Fever have to endure more than just this, what with a highly infectious, flesh-eating virus in their midst. Most of us are familiar with the basic term ‘cabin fever’ – that is, the feeling of being trapped and isolated for a long period of time. There’s a fine balance between humour and horror, sex and violence, the believable and the unbelievable – all of these aspects complimenting each other though, and not in a competitive, chaotic mess. Recommended by Peter Jackson (most known for directing epic films such as The Lord of the Rings trilogy, King Kong and, most recently, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey) and Quentin Tarantino (most known for directing actions movies like Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill and, most recently, Django Unchained) alike, Cabin Fever really has got everything going for it. A group of five college graduates rent a cabin in the woods and begin to fall victim to a horrifying flesh-eating virus, which attracts the unwanted attention of the homicidal locals. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Adult cane toads are chiefly nocturnal in both their native and introduced range, although crepuscular activity is not uncommon 17. Its success as an invader is due to its toxic skin that kills predators 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, but it is also a dietary and habitat generalist with high fecundity (reviewed in 17). The cane toad ( Rhinella marina = ‘ Bufo marinus’) has invaded over 50 countries from its native range in South and Central America 17. Given the serious problems caused by biological invasions, an improved understanding of how behavior contributes to the competitive ability and spread of invasive animals is urgently needed 16. Invasive species are good candidates to search for temporal phase shifts because they often spread into new geographic areas with different selective regimes, manifested in novel predators, competitors or physical environments 15. Finally, life history strategy and physiological condition influenced the likelihood of phase shifts in Salmon 13, 14. Abiotic factors can also cause a phase shift in activity four species of normally diurnal lizards phase shifted to moonlit nights in an open marsh edge, but not in an adjacent forested area where moonlight did not penetrate the forest floor 12. For example, Norway rats shifted their behavior from nocturnal to diurnal in response to predation by foxes 10, and the presence of competitors (polecats and otters) caused mink to shift from predominantly nocturnal to mainly diurnal 11. Physiological constraints such as circadian rhythms as well as behavioral and environmental factors may explain why phase shifts in activity are rare 7, 8, 9.ĭespite their apparent rarity, temporal phase shifts in activity patterns have been demonstrated in vertebrates. Although temporal partitioning between competitors and between predators and their prey is a significant mechanism of coexistence in some ecological communities, relatively few animal species are known to invert their activity patterns into the opposite activity phase as a result of predation or competition 3, 6. Time is an adaptive behavioral resource: animals maintain daily activity patterns that presumably optimize fitness 4, 5. But can novel environments reveal plasticity by causing a shift in a behavior as fundamental and conspicuous as timing of daily activity? An inversion of activity times is not commonly described, despite the fact that it can easily be discerned 3. Such plasticity is not uncommon - frequent behavioral responses to human-induced changed conditions, for example, include alterations in habitat choice, movements, foraging, social behavior and reproductive behavior (reviewed in 2). Plastic behavioral responses can facilitate the establishment of viable populations in novel environments by allowing individuals to survive and reproduce 1. The close proximity of diurnal and nocturnal toads (4–7 km) provided compelling evidence for the abovementioned physical factors as the proximate cause of the behavioral dichotomy, and for a novel (deeply shaded gorges) environment causing the shift to diurnal activity.Ī pivotal response of individual animals to a novel environment is behavioral. Visual encounter surveys confirmed that diurnal activity occurred exclusively at shaded sites, while most nocturnal activity occurred at exposed sites. ![]() ![]() For example, remote camera data (1314 observations of toad activity times over 789 trap days) revealed strictly nocturnal activity at four ‘exposed’ sites (99% of 144 observations over 179 days), compared to mostly diurnal activity at a ‘shaded’ site (78% of 254 observations). Gorges with an east-west axis (day-long northern shadow), narrow gorges and narrow sections of gorges contained toads that were primarily diurnal, while gorges with a north-south axis, wide gorges and wide sections of gorges contained mainly nocturnal toads. Sandstone gorges offered cane toads novel, deeply shaded habitat. Our study can demonstrate, however, that upon reaching novel environments some toad populations became diurnal. Cane toads in Australia are nocturnal, probably because diurnal activity would subject them to intolerably hot and dry conditions in the tropical savannah during the dry season. But can novel environments reveal plasticity by causing a shift in a behavior as fundamental and conspicuous as daily activity? We studied daily activity times near the invasion front of the cane toad ( Rhinella marina), an invasive species that has colonized much of northern Australia. Plastic responses may allow individuals to survive and reproduce in novel environments, and can facilitate the establishment of viable populations. ![]() ![]() To elect six members of the Board of Directors for terms of three years, one member of the Board (the “Corporation”) will be held as follows: Of Internet Availability of Proxy MaterialsĪnnual Meeting of Shareholders of Select Bancorp, Inc. ![]() When the disciples asked why they failed, Jesus uses the mustard seed analogy to explain: “Because of your little faith. Jesus’ disciples tried and failed to exorcise the demon, but He succeeded with one rebuke. In this instance in Matthew 17, however, the Lord uses it to discuss faith with his disciples.Ī man had a son possessed by a demon that gave the child seizures, forcing him to often fall into water and fire. The mustard seed comparison appears several times in the Gospels, usually as a metaphor for the Kingdom of God. Faith must grow, and be tested, and be acted upon with good deeds and evangelism. James even wrote, “faith without works is dead” ( James 2:26b). ![]() The courage to share faith in dangerous settings, or to be martyred for it takes a lot of faith. If someone has faith that God saved their sins, but that God cannot heal an illness, they have a smaller amount of faith than someone who does. The things people will do for God, and their courage they do it with, is correlated with the amount of faith present. Faith cannot remain static or the same in order to have a deeper relationship with the Lord. Mustard trees are huge, despite the size of their seeds. It eventually germinates, where the seedling breaks out of the shell, and grows into a full-sized plant. Of course, the truth about a seed is that it does not remain a seed. By following God’s plan, Christians will do great things for Him, even with the small faith they have at the beginning of their walk. God wants to work with these believers to bring others to Himself, and to build His kingdom “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father” ( John 14:12). When a believer begins their journey, they have just begun to learn about how much God loves them, how much He wants to do for them, and all that He has for them. The mustard seed in Jesus’ example symbolizes the potential in faith. Their seeds are very small, but they grow large. ![]() They can thrive in environments typically hostile to plants. Classified as an evergreen, the Salvadora perisica can grow to twenty feet wide and tall. The mustard seed would have been a common enough plant in that culture they would be able to picture it without reference. What Does It Mean to Have Faith of a Mustard Seed? God wants to work with His people, but will not force them to become instruments of His will like puppets instead He works through them based on their faith, challenging believers to a deeper relationship with Him. Jesus said to those struggling with belief, “Because of the littleness of your faith for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move and nothing will be impossible to you” ( Matthew 17:20). One of the most powerful is that faith can be like a mustard seed. ![]() ![]() ![]() Having the convenience of booting up my computer and being able to play this game anywhere is a huge plus too.
